Healthwatch Haringey wants to hear from you!

In the past year have you been to A&E or been discharged from hospital? If so Healthwatch Haringey wants to hear about your experiences at one of two small discussion groups taking place in November. Refreshments will be provided and participants will receive a £15 shopping voucher to say ‘thank you’ for taking part. Pre-booking is essential as spaces are limited. Venue: Hornsey Vale Community Centre, 60 Mayfield Rd, N8 9LP

Time: 1.00pm to 3.00pm. Cost £5 per person

Friday, Nov 12 – Remembrance service

Venue: Tottenham Cemetery

Time: 10:45am

Crosses will be provided for the children to plant in the soil by the large memorial and a wreath will be laid. Last year 800 children from 10 schools attended. It was a very moving event. If you are not working please go along.


Friday, Nov 10 – Greater London Forum AGM – HO50s committee only

Venue: Age UK London, Tavis House, 1-6 Tavistock Sq, WC1H 9NA

Time: 10:30pm to 2:30pm.

One focus for the future will be to explore the ways in which the GLF can support local forums, and the GLF is therefore inviting nominations for local representatives to join the Executive Committee to ensure that as many forums as possible will be able to help shape their activities.


Tuesday, Nov 14 – Tottenham Pensioners Action Group monthly meeting (meets every second Tuesday of the month)

Venue: Tottenham Leisure Centre

Time: 1:30pm to 3:30pm

Speakers: The A team, plus Mel Tadhunter who will speak on Darts, and how she is working with the communities in sheltered housing schemes.

Generation Exchange IT project – Mid November, date to be arranged

Venue: Hornsey School for Girls

Generation Exchange will be running an intergenerational IT project to bring older and younger people together in the community. Hornsey School for Girls 6th Form volunteers will provide 1:1 IT support to local older people. The course will start in mid-November and will take place from 3.30-4.30 at the school. Day of the week is to be confirmed.

The course will run for 20 weeks and each older person will have their own learning needs assessed by myself prior to the course so that coaching can be tailored to their needs.

Wednesday, Nov 15 – Faith Leaders Forum

A Faith Leaders Forum has existed for a number of years in Haringey, started when Councillor Sheila Peacock was Mayor in 2004, and has done great work in bringing faith leaders together. This event is being held event during Inter Faith Week to mark the re-launch of the Forum with a wider membership and a renewed remit, reflecting the drive to work together to reduce intolerance and better understand religious diversity in Haringey.

Monday, Nov 20th – ‘Up On The High Road’ a Community Play by Tottenham Theatre

Working with local residents, Tottenham Theatre has created Up on the High Road as a celebration of survival and joy in our community. From the Caribbean, Cameroon and Cardiff, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Uganda, Poland, Côte d’Ivoire, from right here in London, their stories weave together to create a tapestry of life through narrative, dance and music.

Tuesday, Nov 21 – Women Rise theatre piece

Venue: Jackson’s Lane

Time: 2:30pm

This powerful, emotive and very necessary forum theatre piece on domestic violence, performed by a team of professional actors and forum facilitator. A discussion and exploration of the issues around violence against women will follow.

There will be light refreshments so please do arrive on time to get a full experience of the event. The theatre piece will start at 3pm.

This event is specifically aimed at women over the age of 55.

Friday, Nov 24 – Haringey Voluntary and Community Sector Expo

This will be the second Haringey Voluntary and Community Sector Expo showcasing the work of Haringey’s diverse range of voluntary and community groups and their impact on the lives of local residents. Friday, Nov 24 – Carers Rights Day 2017

Venue: Tottenham Town Hall, ground floor, Town Hall Approach Rd, London N15 4RY

Time: 1pm – 4pm

Fully trained advocates will be on hand giving one-to-one advice on Carers’ Rights and general issues related to an individual’s caring role. There will also be an information stall with details of other sources of support that are available in Haringey.

Thursday, Nov 30 – Jackson Lane’s Social Lunch (Last Thursday of the month)

Venue: Jackson’s Lane

Time: 11:45am to 2pm

Join the Social Lunch for a 2 course hot lunch for only £5. Plus entertainment and speakers

Please note: It is really helpful for the lunch club to have an idea of numbers as soon as possible as lunches are becoming popular so do book in advance. Please also let Jacksons Lane know of any vegetarian meals required in advance.

Friday, Dec 1 – Over 50s Cinema Club: ‘To Sir With Love’ starring Sidney Poitier*

Plot: American Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) recently received his degree in engineering, but cannot find work. To make ends meet, he takes a job as a teacher in a rough London East End school populated mostly with ‘troublemakers’ who were rejected from other schools for their behavior. While the students at first see Thackeray as just another teacher open for ridicule and bullying, his calm demeanour and desire to see them succeed gradually earn him their respect.
